Wheel of York

Challenge

To complete a tender process for City of York Council to provide a large observation wheel in St. Sampson’s Square, York. The space was extremely limited, with unknown ground conditions and restricted building and dismantling times.

Solution:

The Events By Cynosure team submitted a tender in line with Make it York’s tendering process. We won the tender and proceeded to prepare for the installation.

Over a period of six months, we worked closely with the council and a structural engineer to ensure that the ground conditions were stable and suitable for the 32m-high wheel.

The team managed the installation around the restrictions for entering the site and with sensitivity to other businesses in the area. Two teams worked throughout the nights leading up to the official opening. This included working with power suppliers and ensuring a back-up generator was on site in case of emergencies. We provided all necessary health and safety documentation and ensured staffing and security were obtained and managed.

Result:

The wheel was installed and operated for the whole month of October 2022 in York City Centre. York Mix Radio did a competition throughout the month of October, culminating on the last day with a ‘wheel of fortune’ competition in which four customers won a total of £1,000.
